Another weekend is calling! Here’s my curated list of 11 things to do in metro Detroit this weekend (May 16-18).
Eastern Market Flower Day
Flower Day is Sunday, May 18, from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. at Eastern Market. It’s free to attend, and there will be flower growers and vendors from all over the Midwest.
Mario Kart — Drink & Drive
Detroit Shipping Co. is hosting a Mario Kart game night on Friday, May 16, from 6-10 p.m. Tickets are $5.
Motor City Comic Con
Motor City Comic Con is at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi on Friday, May 16, through Sunday, May 18. Daily passes start at $35 for adults and $5 children.
Art & Vintage Fashion Show
Friday, May 16, from 7-9 p.m. is the Southfield Public Arts & Vintage Fashion Show and fundraiser featuring Selma Blair. Twelve students from the Southfield A&T Dance Team will be modeling 40 articles of clothing from the ‘40s to the ‘70s. Tickets start at $75.
The Central Park Five
The Detroit Opera House has The Central Park Five, an opera adaptation of the true story, Friday, May 16, and Sunday, May 18. Tickets start at $30.
Old Heart
Old Heart is premiering at the Redford Theatre on Saturday, May 17. Old Heart was filmed in both Michigan and the Netherlands. It honors the bravery of Black soldiers during World War II. Tickets start at $15.
Dino Egg Drop at Canterbury Village
Saturday, May 17, and Sunday, May 18, Canterbury Village in Lake Orion is doing a Dino Egg Drop. Amongst animatronic dinosaurs, a helicopter will drop dinosaur eggs for the kids to collect. They can then exchange the eggs for a goodie bag of little toys and candy. Tickets start around $15.
Ride for Equity 2025
Saturday, May 17, is Ride for Equity, a community bike ride to raise money and awareness to the importance of equitable funding practices for entrepreneurs of African descent. You can register or donate on its website.
Rouge River Day
The City of Farmington Hills is hosting a clean-up day at Heritage Park on Saturday, May 17. Volunteers will remove trash and debris from the river, clean up invasive species, plant native wildflowers, and help maintain park trails.
Re-CYCLE for Kids
DG Realty Group and Oakland County Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard are collecting new and used bikes and bike accessories for local kids in need Saturday, May 17, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The main drop off location is South Old Woodward Ave & Haynes St, Birmingham. The second location is the Department of Public Services Open House at 851 S. Eton, Birmingham (hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. here).
Great Lakes Boating Festival
The Great Lakes Boating Festival is in its 36th year, and it includes boats on display, boating vendors, food, and more. It’s Saturday, May 17, and Sunday, May 18. There’s no cost for admission.
